Site Visit To Fincantieri’s Muggiano Shipyard: 2nd October, 2008

sitevisit

After two days fully loaded with discussions on all facets of OPVs, from construction and operations to the latest technology and future requirements, what better way to round off the OPV symposium than by seeing where the talking and planning stops and the full blooded construction begins?

Fincantieri counts over 2,000 vessels built for the Italian Navy and many foreign navies and is the builder of Italian Navy OPV Sirio Class delivered in 2003. The main mission of the Sirio Class Offshore Patrol Vessels is to safeguard national interests, specifically in the fields of anti-pollution and rescue services. The aft area of the deck is fitted with a flight deck for one medium-sized helicopter.

The vessel’s extensive range, sea-keeping and manoeuvrability make it highly flexible in operational terms. Two units have been built for the Italian Navy: Sirio and Orione.

Fincantieri is also the builder of six 47m Patrol Vessels for the Italian Coast Guard and four 53m Patrol vessels for the Iraqi Navy currently under construction in the Muggiano Shipyard.

This will be a full day of activities, with briefings on OPV design as well as a tour and a chance to put questions to the OPV construction experts. With the maritime patrol market heavily investing in Offshore Patrol Vessels, this is the ideal opportunity to see exactly what is on offer from a respected international ship builder. It is also the best chance to join together the hypothetical conversations of the symposium with a study of state-of-the-art OPVs and construction methods.
