Theo Neethling

Theo Neethling obtained his MA degree in 1989 and his DLitt et Phil in 1992, both in the field of International Politics. He joined the Centre for Military Studies in the Faculty of Military Science of Stellenbosch University as a senior researcher in 1997. In 2002 he was appointed as Associate Professor of Political Science and promoted to Professor of Political Science in 2005 in the Faculty of Military Science.
He is the author and co-author of more than 70 scientific and popular scientific articles, and has contributed to eight scholarly books – mostly in the field of multinational peacekeeping and regional security co-operation. Furthermore, he has presented 28 research papers at national and international level, and took part in 14 official and research visits to various governmental, defence and academic institutions in Africa, Asia, Europe and North America. He also lectured as Visiting Professor in the Department of Political and Administrative Studies of the University of Malawi in 2003.
As far as other academic commitments are concerned, he is a member of the SA Association of Political Studies as well as the Africa Institute of SA, and served as Research Associate of the Africa Institute of SA in 2001/2002. He furthermore acted as Editor-in-Chief of Scientia Militaria: South African Journal of Military Studies between 2003 and 2006. Other recent and ongoing activities involve commitments as external examiner for post-graduate students at a number of South African universities, as well as acting as reviewer for various subject journals, chapters and scientific reports.
